Rosh H 5. Why is variety important to a healthy diet? Variety is important because in order to have a well-balanced diet we must eat multiple foods from each of the food groups. The more diversity we have in our diet, the more likely we are to be getting the adequate amount of nutrients our body needs. One food group may provide a critical source of carbohydrates, fiber and vitamins, while others are rich minerals and lipids. The fact that there is no one food in particular that offers the necessary vitamins, minerals and nutrients that we need is another reason why variety in our diet is important. It is not only important to choose foods from food group, but to choose from multiple foods within each group. Our text listed the example of always choosing red meat as the source of protein and how when we do this, we miss out on the fiber from beans and the healthy fats provided by nuts and fish. There are also interactions between different foods and nutrients that can either be positive or negative which is another reason why having a varied diet is so important. Jona P 1. How does the typical U.S. diet compare to recommendations for a healthy diet? To be rather blunt the typical diet in the United States is atrocious. According to the CDC America’s obesity rate currently sits at more than 1/3 of the population just at 34%. This rate is astounding can you imagine that one third of our population falls into the category of obese? Obesity is defined by Merriam-Webster’s dictionary as, “a condition characterized by the excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body.” This can all be a attributed to our diets. The typical American diet consists of eating out on a frequent basis and consuming lots of sugar and fried foods. While the rest of the world is not the picture of nutrition and fitness for every citizen America is certainly in the top of the list in regards to unhealthy diets.
