Topic Directions: Today, the country has gone a long way toward an appearance of classlessness. Americans of all sorts are awash in luxuries that would have dazzled their grandparents. Social diversity has erased many of the old markers. It has become harder to read people’s status in the clothes they wear, the cars they drive, the votes they cast, the god they worship, the color of their skin. The contours of class have blurred; some say they have disappeared. But class is still a powerful force in American life. Over the past three decades, it has come to play a greater, not lesser, role in important ways. At a time when education matters more than ever, success in school remains linked tightly to class. At a time when the country is increasingly integrated racially, the rich are isolating themselves more and more. At a time of extraordinary advances in medicine, class differences in health and lifespan are wide and appear to be widening (Scott and Leonhardt 2005). This statement was taken from a New York Times series called Class Matter which included articles writtenabout social class in America over ten years ago. Go to the HYPERLINK “http://www.nytimes.com/pages/national/class/index.html” NY Times Class Matters series and explore the site a bit. In the above statement the authors refer to both cultural and structural issues of social class in the United States. Here they argue that while cultural class differences are shrinking, structural class inequalities persist and in some cases are growing. Do you agree? Do cultural class differences matter in the U.S today? How? Do structural class inequalities matter in the U.S. today? How? In your essay make an argument for how you believe social class matters (most) in the United States? Make sure to draw on (at least 3 of) the following concepts from your readings – socioeconomic status, education and class, race and class, gender and class, meritocracy, class mobility, class consciousness, poverty,and/or functionalist and conflict views on class inequality. Formatting Directions: Your essay should be 2-3 pages, double spaced, 12 pt. times new roman font, with 1in margins. Your final draft should be submitted as a word document. (Failure to meet any of these formatting requirements will result in an automatic .05% deduction from your final grade.) Please follow the HYPERLINK “https://owl.english.purdue#/owl/resource/685/05/” OWL Purdue guidelines for writing an argumentative essay and include the following in your essay. A clear, concise, and defined thesis statement that occurs in the first paragraph of the essay. Body paragraphs that include evidential support. Evidential support (whether factual, logical, statistical, or anecdotal). A conclusion that does not simply restate the thesis, but readdresses it in light of the evidence provided. This is not a research paper and you are not required to do any extra research (though you are certainlywelcome/encouraged to). As such your argument can be based on logical and anecdotal evidence but should still be clear and concise. You are more than welcome to cite ideas put forth by the textbook authors. However, please refrain from including ANY direct quotes from the textbook authors. Instead, work on synthesizing your own ideas and paraphrasing or rewording ideas that you’ve gained from their work. Please use ASA citation style if you cite any materials and make sure to include a references page if you do so. Bring a hard copy of your first draft of your essay to class on Monday, May 16th for peer review. Your first draft grade, worth 5% of your final grade, will be based both on the completion of your first draft as well as the feedback you provide your partner during the workshopping session. Your final draft, due via a dropbox on D2L on Monday, May 23rd by 3 PM, is worth 10% of your final grade. References Scott, Janny and David Leonhardt. 2005.
